The Complete Google Business Profile Guide for Contractors

Google search results showing local business listings for contractors

Why your Google Business Profile matters

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is often the very first thing a potential customer sees when they search for a contractor in your area. It appears in the 'map pack' — those three local results that show up at the top of Google with a map. Getting into that map pack can mean the difference between getting 10 calls a week and getting zero.

For contractors, GBP is especially critical because most searches are local and urgent. Someone searching 'plumber near me' at 10 PM with a burst pipe isn't browsing — they're calling the first result they see.

Setting up your profile correctly

Start with the basics: your business name (exactly as it appears on your license), your primary service category, your service area, and your business hours. These seem simple, but getting them wrong can hurt your rankings.

Choose your primary category carefully — it's the single biggest ranking factor for the map pack. If you're a plumber, your primary category should be 'Plumber,' not 'Home Services' or 'Contractor.' You can add secondary categories for additional services.

Set your service area to include every city and neighborhood you actually serve. Don't overextend — Google penalizes businesses that claim unrealistically large service areas.

Optimizing for maximum visibility

Upload high-quality photos regularly. Businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs to their website. Include photos of your team, your work vehicles, completed projects, and before/after shots.

Write a compelling business description that includes your primary services and service area naturally. Don't keyword-stuff — write for humans first, search engines second.

Post weekly updates using the Google Posts feature. Share tips, promotions, completed projects, or seasonal reminders. Active profiles rank higher than dormant ones.

Reviews: your most powerful ranking signal

Reviews are the second most important ranking factor for the map pack, right after your primary category. More importantly, they're the number one factor in a homeowner's decision to call you versus your competitor.

Ask every satisfied customer for a review. Make it easy by sending them a direct link. Respond to every review — positive and negative — professionally and promptly. Google rewards businesses that actively engage with their reviews.

The bottom line

Your Google Business Profile is free, powerful, and often underutilized by contractors. A fully optimized GBP can generate more leads than a $2,000/month ad campaign. If you're not actively managing your profile, you're leaving money on the table every single day.
